Contents NoteA commonplace book belonging to William Lloyd, bishop of Norwich. The volume comprises transcripts of printed works; not all of these transcripts are in the bishop's own hand. Contents include: 'The Presbyterian Pater Noster, Creed, and Ten Commandments' (transcript of the short pamphlet of the same name published by Thomas Ashenden in 1681) (ff. 2r-3r); 'Speech lately made by A Noble Peer of the Realm' (ff. 3v-5r); 'A Letter to a Noble Lord Concerning a Late Profane Pamphlet - Entituled. The Presbyterians Pater Noster, Creed, and Ten Commandments' (ff. 5v-8v); 'An Account of the New Sheriffs, holding their Offices, &c.' (ff. 9r-11v), documents relating to the condemnation of Thomas Ashenden for publishing 'The Presbyterian Pater Noster and Creed' (ff. 43r-44v); articles relating to John Gibbs, rector of Gissing, Suffolk, condemned by Bishop William Lloyd for Popish tendencies (ff. 45r-48v); a transcript of John Gibbs' recantation sermon (ff. 49r-52r). Provenance
AcquisitionAn enclosing letter, dated 14 November 1921, is addressed to 'Mr. Gilson' of the British Museum, and is signed 'Eric Maclagan' (i.e. Sir Eric Robert Dalrymple Maclagan'). Maclagan states in this letter that this manuscript had been bought by his father, William Dalrymple Maclagan, archbishop of York. 'Mr. Gilson' is most likely Julius Parnell Gibson.
