Other NoteGeorge IV was born at St James's Palace, London, on 12 August 1762, the eldest son of King George III (1738-1820) and Queen Charlotte (1744-1818). In 1785, he secrely married Mrs Maria Fitzherbert (1756-1837), a Roman Catholic widow. He officially married Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795, whom he later unsuccessfully tried to divorce. George was sworn in as regent on 5 February 1811 after his father was declared insane. In 1820, at the age of fifty-seven, he became king. King George IV died at Windsor on 26 June 1830. His legacies include Brighton Pavilion, which Christopher Hibbert has described as a 'chief memorial of the Regency period'.
