Other NoteBorn around 1640 in Gravel Lane, Southwark, London, the son of a tradesman. He was educated at St Mary Overie, Southwark and Eton College around 1653. Admitted to Peterhouse as a pensioner in 1657. BA in 1660; MA in 1663; DD in 1680. Rector of St George's, Botolph Lane, London in 1669. Assistant, dean, and president at Sion between 1673 and 1683. Master of the Temple in 1685-1705, dean of St. Paul's, London in 1691 and chaplain-in-ordinary to Queen Anne. Rector of Therfield, Hertfordshire from 1698 to his death on 19 June 1707. His clerical career was nevertheless fraught with controversy. He engaged leading Calvinist divine John Owen over soteriology, became involved in controversies over the trinity, and earned the ire of both nonjurors and whigs for accepting William and Mary as de facto sovereigns only.
