Other NoteJohn Fane, eleventh earl of Westmorland, was born on 2 or 3 February 1784 in London, the only son of John Fane, tenth earl of Westmorland (1759-1841) and his first wife, Sarah Anne (1764-1793). He was awarded the degree of M.A. at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1808. In 1806, he became MP for Lyme Regis, retaining the seat until his resignation ten years later. In August 1814, he travelled to Florence as envoy-extraordinary and minister-plenipotentiary, remaining in Italy until 1830, when he began to encounter difficulties during the whig ministeries of this time. He was appointed minister at Berlin in 1841, and succeeded his father as eleventh earl in the same year. He was also a noted amateur musician, founding the Royal Academy of Music in 1823. On 16 October 1859, he died at the country home of his retirement, Apethorpe House in Northamptonshire. His fourth son, Francis William Henry Fane, succeeded him as twelfth earl.
