Other NoteAndrew Gray was the fourth son of the royalist merchant Sir William Gray of Pittendrum and Edidia Smith. He was baptized on 23 August 1633. An encounter with a beggar he met as a child led to him converting. In 1651 he graduated M.A. from St Andrews University. He was licensed by the presbytery of Hamilton as a preacher in 1653. He was ordained minister of the Outer High Kirk, Glasgow on 3 November 1653. The town council initially opposed his appointment, by some because they said that he lacked the natural abilities to be a good preacher. However, he was very successful in his short career. On 31 March 1654, he married Rachel Baillie. He died of a "purple" fever on 8 February 1656.
