Other NoteHugh Latimer was born in Thurcaston, Lancashire. He graduated B.A. in 1511 from Cambridge University; following which, he was elected Fellow of Clare College on 2 February 1510. He proceeded M.A. in 1514 and B.D. in 1524. Notable posts which he held include a chaplaincy at the University (1522-1529) and a rectorship at West Kington, Wiltshire, in 1531. He was Bishop of Worcester in the years 1535-1539. He resigned his bishopric in 1539 because he could not support the Act of Six Articles. Upon the accession of Mary I, Latimer was committed to the Tower, condemned of heresy, and burnt at the stake at Oxford with Nicholas Ridley on 16 October 1555. A memorial plaque, engraved by Heather Howes, is set in the wall of Balliol College, Oxford. The plaque reads as follows: 'Opposite this point near the Cross in the middle of Broad Street Hugh Latimer one time Bishop of Worcester, Nicholas Ridley Bishop of London, and Thomas Cranmer Archbishop of Canterbury, were burnt for their faith in 1555 and 1556.' There is also a cross made of cobblestones set in the middle of Broad Street, under the walls of Balliol, where workmen in the nineteenth century discovered part of the stake and pieces of bone.
