Other NoteNathaniel Crew, third Baron Crew was born on 31 January at Steane, Northamptonshire. He matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford, on 8 June 1653, graduating B.A. on 1 February 1656 and proceeding M.A. on 29 June 1658. He was ordained deacon and priest in Lent 1665. Crew became a king's chaplain on 5 November 1666 and became Rector of Gedney, Lincolnshire, in 1667. He held the latter post until 1671. In the same year, he was elected Bishop of Oxford and appointed Rector of Witney. On 18 August 1674, Crew was elected Bishop of Durham, a position he held until his death. He maintained close relations with James II, acting as one of his chief advisers on church matters, and on 29 December 1685 he became dean of the Chapel Royal. Crew died at Steane on 18 September 1721. He had no children.
