Other NoteJohn Parkhurst was the son of George Parkhurst of Guildford. His exact birth date is unknown. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, graduating B.A. on 24 July 1528 and proceeding M.A. on 17 February 1533. In 1537, Parkhurst became Rector of Little Wittenham, Berkshire. During this time, he was also employed as tutor at Merton, where notable pupils included John Jewel. He became Rector of Pimperne, Dorset in 1547, a post he held until 1548. He was subsequently admitted to the rectory of Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire. Parkhurst left England for Zurich upon the accession of Mary in 1553, returning in 1559. In 1560, he became Bishop of Norwich, a post he was to hold until his death. Parkhurst was awarded the degree of D.Th. on 30 October 1566. In 1573, he published Iohannis Parkhvrsti Ludicra siue Epigrammata Iuuenilia (London, 1573), a collection of Latin poetry. John Parkhurst died on 2 February 1575, at the age of sixty-three, and was buried in Norwich Cathedral.
