Other NoteBorn ca. 1599 in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Educated at Wakefield grammar school before entering Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where he graduated BA in 1619 and MA in 1623. Married Chephtzibah, daughter of William Peachy, incumbent at Oakham in 1620. They had two sons, Jeremiah and William, who also became ministers. It's likely his familial connection helped him become a regular lecturer in Oakham. Additionally, he was Master of Oakham School, Rutland, 1623-1629. Through the patronage of the Cecil family of Burghley he became rector of Stretton, Rutland, 1627-1651. Displayed his puritan sympathies by refusing to read the Book of Sports in 1633, objecting to clerical contributions to fund the bishops' wars in 1639, and taking part in a conference of puritan ministers which condemned new Laudian canons and endorsed the Scottish covenanter invasion. Made member of the Westminster Assembly in 1643 where he expressed presbyterian views. Replaced ministers ejected by parliament, briefly at St Stephen, Coleman Street (1645) and of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey street,1643 which he held until his death 1 June 1654.
