Other NoteBorn in Southwark, the son of Richard Manningham (d. 1682) who was the rector of Michelmersh, and Bridget Blackwell. He was admitted a scholar of Winchester College in 1661 and then elected as a fellow of New College, Oxford, graduating BA in 1673 and MA in 1677. He was a fellow of New College from 1671 - 1681. He took up a living at East Tisted in 1681, where his two sons (with his wife Elizabeth) were baptised. The king admired his preaching and promised him the bishopric of Bath and Wells, however it was in the gift of the lord keeper. Manningham then became preacher at the Rolls Chapel but he was dismissed after making a controversial sermon on 5 November 1684. He then became a lecturer at the Temple and then on 8 September 1691 rector of St Andrew's, Holborn, a post he held til 1713. He then received a DD from Lambeth on 21 December 1691. He was made bishop of Chichester on 13 November 1709. He published many sermons before his death, and was the author of "Two Discourses" (1681) and "The Value of Church and College Leases" (1742). He died on 25 August 1722 at his house in Holborn. His will mentions three sons, two married daughters and five other children.
