Other NoteBishop of Durham and polemical writer. Born ca. 1668 in Dublin to Samuel Chandler. Studied at Trinity College Dublin before having his MA incorporated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1693, where be also became DD in 1701. Ordained priest in 1693, he was first made chaplain to Bishop Lloyd of Lichfield and then prebend of the cathedral there in 1696. He held several livings simultaneously, including rector of St Nicholas, Worcester; vicar of Prees, Shropshire (1698-1706); rector of Wem, Shropshire (1711-1718); prebend of Salisbury, 1703; of Worcester, 1706. Was made Bishop of Lichfield in 1717. Translated to Durham in 1730. Wrote polemical works against Deism: A Defence of Christianity from the Prophecies (1725) and a Vindication of the Defence of Christianity (1728). Married Barbara Briggs, the daughter of Sir Humphrey Briggs. They had two sons and three daughters. Died 20 July 1750.
