Other NoteWilliam Henry Black was born on 7 May 1808 at Walworth, Surrey. At the age of seventeen, he became a private tutor for families living at Tulse Hill, London. From 1831 to 1833, he spent time at Oxford compiling a catalogue for the Ashmole manuscripts, which was published in 1845. In 1840, Black was appointed assistant keeper at the Public Record Office, London. He was ordained minister of a small congregation of Seventh-Day Baptists in the same year; their chapel was at Mill Yard, Leman Street, London until 1885. However, his religious faith was incompatible with his profession. As a sabbatarian, he refused to work on Saturdays, and thus his service at both the Public Record Office and the Treasury was terminated in 1853 and 1854, respectively. In 1858, Black was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He was a member of many other archaeological societies, including the Palestine Archaeological Association. William Henry Black died on 12 April 1872 at London.
