Other NoteWalter Devereux was born on 16 September 1539 at Chartley, Staffordshire. On 4 May 1572, he was created Earl of Essex. From 1573 to 1575, he led an unsuccessful colonising expedition to the Irish province of Ulster. Essex died of dysentery in Dublin, Ireland on 22 September 1576 at the age of thirty-seven, and was buried at Carmarthen on 26 November. He was succeeded by his son Robert, future favourite of Elizabeth I.
