Other NoteWilliam Day was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, receiving his B.A. in 1550, M.A. in 1553, and B.D. in 1562. A fervent Protestant, Day was favoured by Elizabeth's government and was made a prebend of York Minister and archdeacon of Nottingham while still a layman in 1559; he was ordained deacon and priest in 1560. Day became provost of Eton in 1562 amidst some contention from the conservative faction of the fellowship. In 1565 he was made canon of Windsor and dean of Windsor in 1572. Day only secured a bishopric in the last months of his life after several thwarted attempts at candidacy; he was consecrated bishop of Winchester in early 1596. Day died the September of that year, survived by his wife Elizabeth and six children.
