Other NoteThe exact date of birth of Stephan Batman is unknown. He was born at Bruton, Somerset, c. 1542. He was minister of St Mary Aldermanbury in the early years of Elizabeth I's reign, and was instituted to the rectory of St Mary's, Newington, Surrey on 12 January 1570. Batman also served as chaplain to Archbishop Matthew Parker, and was granted the living of Merstham, Surrey, in February 1571. Stephan Batman died in 1584. He is best remembered today as an antiquarian and collector.
