Other NoteJohn Sheffield was born in 1653/4 at Ibstock, Leicestershire to William Sheffield, the rector Ibstock. Educated at Kibworth grammar school and sent to learn a trade, Sheffield instead chose to pursue the ministry by studying under the ejected clergyman and itinerant minister John Shuttlewood. In 1668 Sheffield was caught attending one of Shuttlewood’s conventicles and was sent to Leicester gaol; a portion of his goods were distrained in 1674. Sheffield became chaplain to Mrs. Palmer at Temple Hall in the parish of Sibson, where he married (his wife’s name is unknown) and had at least four children: Letitia, Lydia, Nathaniel, and William. Sheffield was ordained by Shuttlewood and three other ejected ministers in 1682, and two meeting-houses at Temple Hall and at Atherstone, Warwickshire were built for him around 1689. He became minister of the Presbyterian congregation at St Thomas Street, Southwark in 1697. He died on 24 January 1726.
