Contents NoteThirty-nine sermons preached at various places between about 1590 and 1617. The preacher had connections to Westminster and Christ Church and was associated with, perhaps as his chaplain, archbishop Tobie Matthew, both when he was at Durham and York.
Includes Oxford bidding prayers in Latin and English, along with some Latin disputations, &c. In the margins, there are quotations from various authorities, and there are also Latin passages at the end of many of the sermons that give references to authorities.
The catalogue suggests that the author may be John Calfhill or Calfield (d. 1619), who was may have been a cousin of the archbishop. There is a note on the outside cover attributing these sermons to Dr. South, but as he lived from 1634 to 1716, this clearly is false, as is pointed out in the catalogue.
Material FeaturesIn English and Latin, 7 3/8 x 5 ¼ in. 246 leaves: in a cloth case 7 7/8 x 6 1/2 x I 7/8 in. From f. 198r on, the sermons are copied from the other end of the book and are written upside down.
