Other NoteLinning or Lining, he wrote his own name Linen. Known to be a student at the University of Glasgow in 1678 after which he went to Holland and studied theology at Emden, being ordained by that Presbytery in 1688. In the company of William Boyd and Alexander Shields he returned to Scotland in 1689 when the Covenants were renewed. Admitted to the Church of Scotland in 1690 and admitted to the charge of Lesmahagow 13 May 1691. He was appointed Chaplain-in-Ordinary to the King in Scotland Nov 1727 and died 18 Oct 1733 aged 76. He has been described as 'one of the most eminent clergymen in his day.'
