Other NotePope during much of the Thirty Years War, he attempted to maintain a mediating neutrality, but tended to favour France over Spain. Spent extravagantly beautifying Rome and enriching his relatives. During his reign the theses of Galileo Galilei and of Cornelius Jansen were condemned. His extravagance resulted in popular rejoicing in Rome at his death.
