Other NoteHerring was born in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire in 1582. He went to school in Coventry, where his father served as sheriff and mayor. Herring was admitted to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in 1600, earning his B.A. in 1604. Herring was trained by Puritans and chose to be ordained by an Irish bishop so he would not have to subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles. From 1610 to 1618, Herring was a popular preacher in Calke, Derbyshire. In this period, he married Christian Gellibrand, with whom he had thirteen children. Having been forced out of Calke by enemies, Herring moved to St Alkmund's, Shrewsbury, in 1618, where has was lecturer until 1635. In St Alkmund's, he again garnered ill will from conformists, and he was even personally scorned by Archbishop Laud. After he was suspended from St. Alkmund's for nonconformity, Herring resided in Wrenbury, Cheshire. Thereafter, he left to become co-paster of the English Reformed church at Amsterdam in 1637, where he spent the remainder of his life. Herring died on 28 March 1643/4.
