Contents NoteContains miscellaneous notes, apparently for sermons, on a number of theological issues including baptism, the Lord's supper, summaries of contemporary controversial theological and classical works. ff. 3v-5r has a collection of biblical references on particular topics (such as Desire); f. 7, Whitakeri et Duraei concertationes - Sacrae literae; in Greek, title in red; ff. 14v-15r Latin notes on "Vita philosophia mortis meditatio"; ff.48-50: Reinoldes and Hart ['The summe of the conference between Iohn Rainolds and Iohn Hart' (1584) written in reverse, titles in red ink; f. 88r signatures, including the name "Thomas Wittacherus" and "Cantabrigia"; ff. 89-107 analysis of "Epistola ad Romanos", including a diagram on f.89r, in Latin; ff. 120-8: commentaries on Matthew, Luke, and "Epistola 2 ad Timotheum" in Latin and Greek; f. 133 signature of "Ralphe Abate"; f.109, the first verse of Hosea in vocalised Hebrew; ff. 135-164 "Annotationes in primum librum Aristotelis physicorum (- in 3m librum)" in Latin; ff. 184-5 "Ex Epistolis Horatii"; ff. 187-215 "Observationes & propositiones quotquot contientur in libris Aristotelis Ethicorum, which is ascribed at the end "Per F.Y." (possibly Francis Young, St John's Cambridge, 1581-1584, not the hand of Anthony Higgin)
Material Features1 vol. 220ff. The following folios are blank: ff. 66, 113-115, 117-119, 129, 132, 166-167, and 180-182. Much of the text is inverted in relation to the modern pencil foliation. There is some rubrication in the text, including the first verse of Hosea in vocalised Hebrew on f.109r. Extensively damaged by damp, so that the text in many places is illegible. Rebound in boards ca.1820.
Provenance
AcquisitionAnthony Higgin (d. 1624) collected books extensively throughout his life and left them to the church at Ripon when he died. The surviving part of his collection, which numbers about 1250 volumes, is now preserved in Leeds University Library as part of Ripon Cathedral Library.
