Contents NoteContains notes on over one hundred sermons taken by William Sancroft the elder, master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1582-1637). One of three commonplace books (MSS. Rawl. D. 1330-1332) owned by Sancroft. The contents are difficult to categorize. The manuscript contains mostly full sermon notes, but some are single paragraphs on a particular passage. It is unclear whether the notes are for Sancroft's own sermons or on someone else's sermons. The notes seem too neat to be have been recorded at the sermons themselves, and some seem to be taken from other sources. This is indicated by the comments of William Sancroft the younger, Archbishop of Canterbury (1617-1693) added to the index (ff. 267-268) which identify some of the printed sources from which the notes were copied. Many of these contain doctrines and uses, but it is difficult to tell whether they are Sancroft’s original thoughts or not. Passages on identical texts are linked by directions to go to certain pages in this volume. Also contains Latin notes on such subjects as the Church, presbyters, and baptism.
Material FeaturesPaper, quarto, 268 leaves. Written in Sancroft's hand which is small, close, and clear. "Lib. Chart. ," is written on the parchment cover. An old catalogue number, 311, is written on the back. Blank on ff. 244-265.

Other NoteSancroft's name does not appear in any of the three manuscripts, but the cataloguer has identified him from the handwriting. The manuscript itself is not dated but two of the sermons are dated 1608 and 1609, respectively.
