Contents NoteAlong with MS. Eng. th. b. 1, one of two volumes of collected theological and historical materials favouring Roman Catholicism. The author identifies himself as Thomas Jollet, but the cataloguer says this is a pseudonym. Contains Jollet's theological writings, including his glosses on New Testament verses and various other materials. Divided alphabetically into sections numbered Lib. 51 ("Hope") to 93 ("Zeal"). Features information and lists regarding recusants and their history, under the heading “Persecution”. Includes a sermon (pp. 854-859) in Lib. 89, "Of Contingents", on Ecclesiastes 4:2, preached by Thomas White. Also includes part of a commission to the Northamptonshire justices, written during the reign of James I, to investigate the recusancy of Mary Brudenell (pp. i-ii); accounts of some executions in 1601 (Mark Barkworth, Roger Filcock, Ann Line) (pp. 103-118) with a four-part setting of words sung by Barkworth on the way to his execution, attributed to Mr. Byrd (p. 116); a chronological list of English martyrs from the years 286-1680 (pp. 121-130); a list of English Catholics who have been persecuted (pp. 395-413); papers concerning Sir Thomas Tresham, particularly his imprisonment and interrogation (pp. 822-836), with an engraving of his coat of arms (p. 823); papers by Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, including a copy of his treatise and some of his letters (pp. 860-880); initials from a liturgical manuscript, perhaps from early 14th-century England (pp. 41, 315, 649).
Material FeaturesA very large folio bound in calf, ii + 966 pages. A beautiful volume with gold leaf lettering to initial letters (in headings) in some sections. Much repair work done. Inscribed with "S. D. V." and dated 27 April 1653. The text is divided into ruled compartments. Decorated with pen work and cuttings from illuminated manuscripts and printed books. Includes coloured initials and contemporary annotations in various hands.
