GEMMS: Gateway to Early Modern Manuscript Sermons
GEMMS IDGEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-000577
TitleCommonplace Book
ShelfmarkMS 16971A
Creation Dateca. 1658 - 1675
Contents NoteThe volume is a commonplace book containing proverbs and sermons (both original and transcribed) in English, Latin, and Greek. The fly-leaf contains this inscription: "M ... Edwardi Warreni de Wormington in Comit Gloucesterio Anno Doni 1664 Anno Etatis 23." The entire duodecimo manuscript is written in a small, fairly neat hand, likely Warren's judging by the inscription. Adam Addams-Williams, likely related to the donor, has annotated some entries and commented on their contents. In particular, based on a sermon it contains on King Charles the Martyr, he refutes the suggestion (published in the notice of auction for the manuscript, inserted as a loose slip of paper) that the owner of this manuscript was a Puritan.
