Material FeaturesQuarto. 'D. DOWSING, Bookbinder, Ipswich.' appears on a printed label in the top left-hand corner of the front pastedown. In addition, '6d 10' is written in pencil on the front pastedown. The lettering on the spine reads 'EDGERTON'S SERMON 1589'. The manuscript is unfoliated and unpaginated.

Provenance'David Sawner, given him by his friend W. J. (or S.) Fitch 183[?]8' is written on the recto of the first leaf. c. 40 items from the Carlton Shorthand Collection formerly belonged to the stenographer James Henry Lewis (1786-1853).
AcquisitionThe Carlton Shorthand Collection, among the most extensive extant shorthand collections, contains about 18,000 books, periodicals, and pamphlets related to stenography. Much of the collection was put together by William J. Carlton (1886-1973), a scholar of Charles Dickens's shorthand. The collection was primarily bequeathed by Carlton, with some later donations from the shorthand teacher, Peter Dorey.
