Served as Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge from 1661 to 1672. Rector of Terrington, Norfolk, 1660-1673. Chaplain to King Charles II, 1660-1673. Also served as master of Jesus College (1660-1662) and later of Trinity College (1662-1673), both at Cambridge. Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1667. Bishop of Chester from 1672 until his death in 1686. Rector of Wigan, Lancashire, in commendam, 1673-1686.
