Other NoteAstronomer and clergyman. Precise date of birth unknown, but Ward was baptized on 5 April 1617. B.A. (1637) and M.A. (1640) from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and fellow there (1640-1644) until deprived for refusing to swear to the Solemn League and Covenant. Became D.D. in 1654. Savilian Professor of Astronomy, 1649-1660. President of Trinity College, Oxford, 1659-1660. According to Venn, he was rector of Garsington, Oxfordshire in 1660, and eventually ejected. Canon (1660-1662) and dean (1662) of Exeter. Bishop of Exeter, 1662-1667. Vicar of St Lawrence Jewry, 1661-1662. Rector of Uplowman, Devon, 1661. Rector of St Breock, Cornwall, 1662. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663. Bishop of Salisbury from 1667 until his death in 1689.
