Other NoteThomas Newcomen, Church of England clergyman, was born in Colchester, c. 1603. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Colchester and St John's College, Cambridge, where he was the inaugural Lewis Scholar. He graduated B.A. in 1625. He was ordained in London on 24 September 1626. In 1628, he proceeded M.A. and became rector of St Runwald's and Holy Trinity, Colchester. Staunchly Royalist, he inclined towards Laudianism, and suffered considerable consequences for doing so. Despite these difficulties, he was presented to a living at Headbourne Worthy in 1643 by the Earl of Salisbury. Ten years later, he was admitted to the rectory of Clothall, Hertfordshire. Newcomen proceeded D.D. in 1660 and was given a prebend at Lincoln, which he held until his death in 1665.
