Other NotePhilip Bisse was born in Stokeland, Somerset. He graduated B.A. from the University of Oxford on 28 June 1560. He was a fellow of Brasenose College in 1561, proceeding M.A. on 20 October 1564. He became Rector of Batcombe, Somerset, in 1564. He subsequently became a fellow of Magdalen College and proceeded B.D. on 14 July 1569. He was sub-dean and canon of Wells in 1571, and vicar of Wiveliscombe in 1572, progressing to D.D. on 8 July 1581. Bisse became Archdeacon of Taunton in 1584, a post which he held until his death on 28 October 1613. He was buried at Batcombe, commemorated by a memorial brass which depicts the Archdeacon kneeling at a prayer-desk. The brass also notes his vast library of 2,000 books, the entirety of which was bequeathed to Wadham College, Oxford.
