Dean of Cloyne in 1640. Chaplain and eventually chaplain-general in the army during the Confederate Wars, based in Munster. Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, 1660-1663. Archbishop of Dublin, 1663-1679. Lord Chancellor of Ireland, 1665-1686. One of three men jointly appointed lord justice of Ireland on three separate occasions, another being Arthur Forbes. Archbishop of Armagh from 1679 until his death in 1702.
