Other NoteCalybute Downing was born in Shenington, Gloucestershire. He was first admitted as a pensioner at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in Easter 1623. Subsequently, he was awarded a B.A. degree from Oriel College, Oxford on 20 November 1626, and proceeded M.A. from Peterhouse, Cambridge four years later. In 1632, Downing became rector of Ickford, Buckinghamshire. He also held the rectory of West Ilsley, Berkshire, from 1632 until 1637. In this year, he was awarded the degree of LL.D. and became vicar of Hackney, Middlesex, a post he held until 1643. During the 1640s, he also held a lectureship at Stepney. As a member of the Westminster Assembly, Downing was the author of a number of tracts. He died in 1644.
