Other NoteJohn Knewstub, 'the most famous and the acknowledged president of the Suffolk preachers' (Collinson, p. 449), was born at Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, in 1544. His exact date of birth is unknown. He matriculated pensioner from St John's College, Cambridge, in Michaelmas 1561. He graduated B.A. in 1564, proceeding M.A. in 1568. Knewstub was a university preacher from 1570. He was awarded the degree of B.D. in 1576. He was rector of Cockfield, Suffolk from 1579, and held this living until his death on 29 May 1624. In his will, he left gifts to various clergymen, including Henry Sandes, Ezekiel Culverwell, and Samuel Ward (town preacher of Ipswich).
