Other NoteSon of William Williamson, a glover in St Andrews. He graduated M.A. from St Andrews in 1655 and was recommended by the Masters of the New College on 24 March and licensed to the Presbytery on 23 June 1658. In 1659, he became a helper to Alexander Balfour, the minster of Abdie and ordained there on 30 November 1665. He was deprived by the Act of Parliament and Privy Council for not conforming to Episcopacy in 1662, but continued to preach until April 1665. He refused a call to Glasgow. He was denounced as a rebel for holding conventicles in July 1674, and intercommuned in August 1675. After the Indulgence granted in 1687, he returned to Edinburgh, where a meeting-house was made for him in Water of Leith villlage. On 3 February 1688 he was arrested, but only for a fortnight, as his name was found in a memorandum belonging to Renwick. He was then arrested again, charged with not praying for the birth of the Prince of Wales. At the General Assembly after the Revolution in 1690, he was restored to his former parish. He married seven times: 1) Isobel Lindsay, who died in March 1665 and had a son William, who also died young; 2) Margaret Scott, with whom he had a daughter, Margaret; 3) in c. 1676 to Jean Kerr, daughter of William Kerr of Cherrytrees, having a daughter, Elizabeth; 4) to Margaret Melville, d. 1692; 5) Margaret Dougall, mother of David, Mary and William; 6) name unknown; 7) on 10 May 1700 to Jean Straiton, with whom he had issue: Arthur, Joseph and Jeanne. He died on 6 August 1706.
