Other NoteGilbert Sheldon was born on 19 June 1598. He graduated B.A. from Trinity College, Oxford on 27 November 1617, proceeding M.A. on 28 June 1620. Two years later, he became a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. Sheldon was awarded the degree of B.D. on 11 November 1628. He became vicar of Hackney in 1633, and was awarded the degree of D.D. on 25 June 1634. From 1635 until 1648, Sheldon was warden of All Souls, and also served as rector at various parishes in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. In the Restoration, he resumed his post as warden of All Souls and became bishop of London. Finally, Sheldon became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1663, a position he held until his death on 9 November 1677. He was buried at Croydon Church a week later.
