Other NoteThe eldest son of J'Aques (or in English James) Wittewrong (Witrewrongle) a protestant who fled from Flanders during the persecution, Jacob was born in Ghent on 15 January 1558 and came over with his father. He is sometimes referred to as James in English documents. He was educated at St. Albans and went to Magdalen College in 1576, where he as under the supervision of Dr Humphreys, president of the college. He married Susanna, the heir of Bernard Tileman, a German gentleman. Through her, he inherited a house and land at Walthamstow. He became interested in brewing and built a brew-house and mansion in Grantham Lane, attaining a considerable fortune. His first wife died leaving no male heir, and he married again, to Anna, the youngest daughter and coheir of Garrard Vanacher, merchant of Antwerp. They had one son, John. In 1619, he retired to a house he bought in Westham, Essex. He died there in July 1622 and was buried there. His widow married Sir Thomas Middleton, lord Mayor of London and oversaw John Wittewrong's education, buying for him the manor of Harpenden in Herfordshire. He would be knighted in 1640.
