Other NoteWriter of religious polemic and Precentor of Salisbury. Born 24 March 1637 (date given in DNB, but not substantiated) at Rushden, Northamptonshire to Thomas Whitby, rector there. Matriculated from Trinity College, Oxford in July 1653; scholar 1655; BA, 1657; MA, 1660; fellow, 1664; BD and DD, 1672. Chaplain to Seth Ward, bishop of Salisbury in 1668. His favour with the bishop led to his appointment as prebendary at Salisbury (1668-1698) and rector of St Edmund (1668-1680) and precentor in 1672, a post he held until his death 24 March 1725.
