Other NoteGeorge Atherton Aitken was born in Barkingside, Essex on 19 March 1860. He studied English at University College London, subsequently entering the civil service in 1883. In 1889, he published a two-volume biography of Richard Steele. Aitken transferred to the Home Office in 1892. In 1913, Aitken became head of the Children's Department at the Home Office. Notably, he became a Companion of the Order of Bath in 1917. He died on November 16 of the same year at the age of fifty-seven.
