Other NoteRobert Devereux was born on 10 November 1565. His father, Walter Devereux, First Earl of Essex, died in September 1576. Subsequently, he succeeded his father as the Second Earl of Essex. During this time, he was supervised by William Cecil, Lord Burghley. Essex matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge on 1 July 1579. He was created M.A. two years later (incorporated at the University of Oxford in 1588). Essex became master of the horse in 1587. Ten years later, he became Earl-marshal of England. On 25 August 1598, he was chosen as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He served as lord-lieutenant of Ireland in 1599. Essex was beheaded in the courtyard of the Tower of London on 25 February 1601. He is remembered today as the great favourite of Elizabeth I. See Paul E. J. Hammer, The Polarisation of Elizabethan Politics: The Political Career of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, 1585-1597 (Cambridge, 1999); Alexandra Gajda, The Earl of Essex and Late Elizabethan Political Culture (Oxford, 2012); Annaliese Connolly and Lisa Hopkins, eds, Essex: The Cultural Impact of an Elizabethan Courtier (Manchester, 2016).
