Other NoteThe exact birth date of Thomas Godwin is unknown. Born in Wokingham, Berkshire, he graduated B.A. from Magdalen College, Oxford on 12 July 1543, proceeding M.A. in 1548. He was a fellow of Magdalen from 1544 until 1549. On 17 June 1555, Godwin was awarded the degree of B.Med, and practised medicine until the accession of Elizabeth I. Subsequently, he proceeded B.D. and D.D. on 17 December 1565 and 18 February 1566, respectively. He served as dean of Christ Church, Oxford from 1565 until 1567. Over the course of the 1560s, he held livings at Kirkby Mallory (Leicestershire), Hannington (Northamptonshire), Winwick (Northamptonshire) and Lutterworth (Leicestershire). On 10 March 1567, Godwin became dean of Canterbury. He was elected to the see of Bath and Wells on 13 September 1584, and held his bishopric until his death at Wokingham on 19 November 1590. His wall tablet is still extant at Wokingham church, where he was buried on 24 November 1590.
