Other NoteSamuel Bernard of Berkshire matriculated from Magdalen College, Oxford in 1607; he graduated B.A. in 1610, proceed M.A. in 1613 and B.D. in 1620/1, and was created D.D. in 1638/9. Having served as an usher at Magdalen School in 1612, he later held the position of master from 1617 to 1625. He was licensed to preach in 1621 and became vicar of Croydon, Surrey in 1624; he was sequestered by the committee for plundered ministers in 1643. Bernard also held the rectories of Tarring, Sussex from 1629, of Hollingbourne from 1637, and of Buxted St. Margaret, Sussex from 1638, but was deprived of all three during the Rebellion. He died on 5 August 1657 and was buried in Farley Church.
