Other NoteBorn in Hilton, Dorset, John Freke matriculated from Wadham College, Oxford in 1669 and entered Middle Temple the same year; he was called to the bar in 1676. Freke ran afoul of authorities on account of his authorship of a controversial satire and his membership in the Green Ribbon Club. In 1683 Freke was implicated in an uprising against the king, and in 1685 he was taken into custody on the charge of attempting to assist the duke of Monmouth's rebellion. Freke fled to the Netherlands, where he struck up a life-long friendship with John Locke and became closely involved with Locke's "College." While Freke eventually returned to England, little is known of his later life. He died in 1717, although the place of his burial is unknown.
