Other NoteJohn Bickerton Williams was born on 4 March 1792 at Sandford Hall, Shropshire. He did not attend university, but was articled to an attorney. In 1816, he was admitted an attorney at Shrewsbury; three years later, he was admitted a burgess. A Dissenter, he was a collector of theological manuscripts; in particular, those authored by Matthew and Philip Henry. In November 1836, Williams became mayor of Shrewsbury. On 19 July 1837, Williams was the first person to be knighted by Queen Victoria. His honours included his election to the Society of Antiquaries and the American Antiquarian Society. Williams died on 21 October 1855 at The Hall, Wem, Shropshire, and was buried six days later.
