Other NoteCharles was the son of Elector Frederick V and Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of King James I of England. As Elector, he was seized and imprisoned in 1639. Upon his release, he travelled to England to seek help from King Charles I in restoring his lands. During the English Civil Wars, however, Charles Louis was sympathetic to the Parliamentary cause. He returned to Europe, and was restored to the Palatinate and created Duke of Bavaria. He died on 28 August 1680.
