Other NoteFrom Brentwood, Shelton was schooled in Felsted and admitted sizar to Jesus College, Oxford in May 1650. He gained his BA in 1653, MA 1657 and was a fellow from 1655 to 1663, becoming incorporated at the university in 1660. In 1661 he became vicar of Great Bursted, holding the post until 1670. He was then made vicar of St James' Colchester, a post he held until his death. From 1691 he was also vicar of Stisted. He was buried at St James on 23 October 1699. He had a son, also named William Shelton, born c.1665 and who died whilst at university in 1686 (ACAD Venn SHLN683W).
