Other NoteOriginally from the North Riding of Yorkshire, Elias Smyth matriculated sizar from Pembroke College, Cambridge, aged eighteen, in Michaelmas 1623. He graduated B.A. in 1626/7 and proceeded M.A. in 1631. Smyth was ordained deacon on 8 June 1628. Afterwards, he served as precentor of Durham. From 1640 until 1666, he was headmaster of Durham Grammar School. In 1643, he was also instituted to the living of Bedlington, Northumberland, although he was ejected shortly after. Elias Smyth was buried in Durham Cathedral on 9 December 1676.
