Other NoteJohn Mayer was baptised on 16 June 1583 at Long Melford, Suffolk, the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Mayer. He matriculated from St John's College, Cambridge, in 1583, migrating to Emmanuel College on 2 March 1598. Mayer graduated B.A. in 1602 and proceeded M.A. in 1605. From 1609, he was rector of Little Wratting, Suffolk, a post he held for twenty-two years. He was awarded the degrees of B.D. and D.D. in 1612 and 1627, respectively. From 1631, he served as rector of Raydon, Suffolk. He published biblical commentaries extensively over his lifetime. Other publications include An Antidote Against Popery (1625), republished several times. Mayer died on 5 March 1664.
