Other NotePrecise date of birth unknown, but Carte was baptized on 23 April 1686. Matriculated from University College, Oxford in 1698. B.A. (1702) from Brasenose College, Oxford. M.A. (1706) from King's College, Cambridge. Reader at Bath Abbey beginning in 1707. Carte was apparently involved in the Atterbury Plot and was accused of high treason in 1722. Thereafter he lived in exile in France until 1728, when he was allowed to return to England.
