DescriptionA sermon on the last verse of Mark 9 (i.e., verse 50), described as a “Latine Sermon by him preached to the Clergy of London. Octob: 6. 1635. To the wch hee was appointed by the Governors of Sion College, according to their Charte. Together with the Copy of the Sermon (to wch are annexed a Protestation, and Prayer,) delivered to the Register of the Highe Commission Courts, as they call it. February. 24. 1635.” On the facing pages is an English translation, almost certainly by Burges who has written copious contextual notes in the margins. Some of them are personal commentary on the contents, e.g., comments against papists and Dominicans (p. 89). A passage on p. 145 is underlined and described as “nothing but a pompous description of an Arbour in a Country garden to which Cyprian was not retyred to take ayre, and in which he was not writing to his friend Donatus.” Burges notes on p. 65 that there is no point in Englishing a Latin pun.

Other NoteAlthough it is not certain that this is an autograph manuscript copy of the Latin sermon with the author's facing page translation, the hand strongly resembles that of Burges, who is clearly identified as the transcriber of the Westminster Confession, also housed at Westminster College, Cambridge University.
