Additional MaterialIn another, later hand, a cross reference to Phillips MS 11100 is given, presumably part of the collection of the antiquary Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), whom some estimate to have amassed the largest ever private collection of manuscripts and rare books. Phillipps's collection was left to the nation after his death, but with very stringent conditions. He wished the library to remain in place at Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham, with the express condition that they would not be rearranged, and that no Roman Catholic or his son-in-law would be permitted to handle them. He had been estranged from his daughter and son-in-law after he believed his son-in-law to have stolen his 1603 edition of Hamlet and sold it to the British Museum. These conditions were found to be untenable and so after many decades his collection was sold variously to the Royal Library, Berlin, the Royal Library of Belgium, the Provincial Archives in Utrecht, the J. Pierpont Morgan and Henry E. Huntington libraries.
