DescriptionThe full title of the sermon is ‘A Sermon preached at St Maries in Oxford The 17 day of November 1602 in defence of the festivities of the Church of England, and namely that of Her Majesties Coronation’. This is a partial transcription of the second impression of the printed sermon by John Howson. The last leaf/leaves are wanting.

Other NoteWritten in a neat italic hand. The title page is copied in full from the printed edition. Part of the dedicatory epistle is also included. In the sermon proper, the scribe writes out the biblical verse but excludes pp. 1–8 and the first part of p. 9 of the printed sermon, beginning instead as follows: ‘Because there is a question made even in these daies concerning the authoritie of instituting Holy-daies both under the olde and newe Testament […]’ (f. 25v). The page numbers of the printed edition are indicated in the margins of the manuscript. The scribe has also copied some of the printed marginalia from the edition into the manuscript. According to Kenneth Fincham, ‘Howson, vice-chancellor in 1602–3, provoked controversy in a sermon he preached on 17 November 1602 in which he vigorously defended church festivals and emphasized the importance of communal prayer rather than preaching’.
